About Ultimate Random Night:
I really wanted to like this game. But if you’re like me and you saw the video where they show you designing the hull section by section. That’s not the case in the actual game. Only pre-generated hulls. So you can forget about coming up with interesting designs. On top of that you’re required to put a certain amount of main guns. So you’re even further restricted. The campaign is very bare bones. You have very little choices and even the disposition of the battles don’t seem to have much of a choice. You can choose how to design your ships within the limitations of the pre-made hulls and restrictions. Plus in campaign you’re limited by your tech. So if you’re playing early campaign it feels really restrictive. I confess to enjoying this game way more than I should, & some big brand titles are sitting idle as I thrash this game. It is great fun designing the ships, trying out different aspects of armour vs canon etc. My favourite games are where you get go in with one uber ship & toast about 6 others. Jostling for position, directing your fire, keeping out of gun range. Quality vs quantity kind of thing. This, to be honest, is also because of game mechanics… your team just don’t do what they are supposed too, ram your own ships & the lead keeps pealing off soon as it takes some fire… so handling just one ship is actually the least frustrating. On the whole she is good game, with lots of scenarios & ships from the the squat little USS Monitor 1860s, up to WW2, 1940s. I found it both educational & fun… I am heading off to sleep so I can wake up fresh to kill the day playing it tomorrow as well!
