Overview Warpips:
Warpips is what would happen if Command and Conquer and Nexus Wars had a baby made out of tanks and napalm! Set loose the engine of war and watch the chaos of physics-based combat explode onto the battlefield! Assemble your army from a diverse roster of infantry, vehicles and airplanes. Deploy troops, call down airstrikes, and launch missiles – all without that pesky micromanagement. I’ve often enjoyed real-time strategy, but the games at the pinnacle of eSports are a bit too much for me. When I try to compete in Starcraft or Age of Empires, I end up feeling incompetent. While those games are undeniable tests of skill, trying managing all of unit abilities, positioning in battle, unit counters and my economy back home is a bit too overwhelming for my tastes. For this reason, I’ve spent more time with RTSes which simplify things by stripping away some of the systems to manage. Company of Heroes, Dawn of War 2 and — going way back — the Kohan series were much more enjoyable for me. Warpips is an RTS in this simplified tradition, but unlike those games, it removes tactical positioning and the levels become a linear tug-of-war between two sides.
Warpips Pre-Installed:
I was worried that Warpips might be a bit too simple for my tastes, but my concerns were unjustified. There are plenty of decisions to make. Unit counters, tradeoffs between long-term economy and short term unit rushes and global abilities are all present and keep the matches interesting. In the campaign mode, there is a meta progression where units with a fixed number of uses are unlocked, and there is a nice strategic tension about whether to use a unit now, or to wait for a future map where you might need it more. I do have a couple of complaints – Warpips is single-player only. PvP would be a great addition here. Also, the ‘endless’ mode is much less interesting than I had hoped. Due to the way that the gameplay encourages you to push forward, in ‘endless’ you might spend many minutes with your units parked in the enemy base, doing not much of anything interesting.
